CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
“She reaches out her hands to the poor and extends her arms to the needy.” (Proverbs 31:20, First Reading, Sunday, November 19, 2023)
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This year, Sunday, November 19, is the World Day of the Poor, whose theme is “Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor” (Tob 4:7). On that date our diocese will participate in the U.S. Bishops’ annual national collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). Through this second collection, support for CCHD helps people work together responding to others in need and overcoming the complex challenges of poverty across the United States.
Please remember that 25% of the CCHD collection in our diocese stays in Hawaii to extend our hands and arms to others in need here. CCHD funds donated from our parishes have contributed to a variety of effective community efforts including: helping houseless survivors of natural disasters rebuild their lives; assisting formerly incarcerated or homeless women with transitional housing and job training; and supporting non-profit organizations helping low-income families build and own affordable housing.
I strongly encourage all to give generously to the CCHD collection as a way of witnessing to Jesus by reaching out our hands to the poor and extending our arms to those in need.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Larry Silva
Bishop of Honolulu
