FOR THE CARNIVAL—Displaying mouth-watering delicacies to be sold at St. Patrick’s Carnival Friday and Saturday (May 11 and 12) are, from left, Sister Robert[a]* Noda, Sister Mary Charlotte Kahalewai, and Mrs. Abigail Hoke, school cook. The sisters, who are instructors, the school staff and parents of the children have spent unaccountable nights and days in the school cafeteria baking pastries. Displayed are lemon, orange and strawberry fruit pound cakes and peanut butter cookies.

*The original 1973 article misspelled Sister Roberta Noda‘s first name.

Feeling like Moses

On May 7, amidst the beep, beep, beep, beeping of heavy trucks, the exhaust of bulldozers and the hum of the highway, Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario and some 40 Leeward Oahu Catholics blessed the ground where the long-awaited St. Jude Church will be built.

“I can’t help but feel a little like Moses when he reached the promised Land,” said St. Jude pastor Father Roland Pacudan about the 30-year wait for a church in Makakilo. “I don’t know about the milk and honey part, but I sure know it feels like we are home.”

Offertory protections

Surprise audits are coming to the Islands’ 66 parishes in an effort by the diocese to ensure that money collected from Mass offertories is being handled securely.

According to diocesan finance officer Lisa Sakamoto, representatives from the local firm Acuity will visit each parish “soon” (the diocese is not divulging the schedule) to observe the parish’s collection-counting practices. A checklist of guidelines was sent to churches last year detailing proper methods to prevent theft.
