To fill the growing need for school psychologists in Hawaii’s public schools, Chaminade University and the Hawaii State Department of Education have partnered to offer 20 full-tuition scholarships to earn an education specialist (Ed.S.) in school psychology degree. Applications are being accepted now for the Fall 2023 term, which begins Oct. 1.
The psychology degree offers a curriculum that prepares students to meet the holistic needs of pre-K-12 students. School psychologists play a critical role in the education community, providing vital counseling, assessment and intervention services aimed at helping students succeed in a healthy learning environment.
“The mental and emotional health of our students are important priorities for our state,” said Chaminade president Lynn Babington in a news release. “We are pleased to partner with the Hawaii State Department of Education to offer this opportunity to health care professions who want to make a positive impact on our youth.”
The education specialist in school psychology degree is offered through a 36-month, 60-credit online program funded entirely by the Department of Education (tuition, textbooks and fees are covered). It is designed for working professionals who will gain the knowledge and skills essential to providing support and care for pre-K-12 students.
School superintendent Keith Hayashi said in a statement, “School psychologists play a key role in our schools’ efforts to improve academic achievement, promote positive behavior and mental health, create safe and positive school climates, and strengthen family-school partnerships. We want to thank Chaminade University for their partnership in expanding our school psychologist workforce to fill a critical area of need.”
