50 years ago — April 20, 1973

The 1973 Hawaii Catholic Herald Easter issue featured an image of the resurrected Jesus, the words, “Truly He Is Risen, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia,” and a photo of these three first communicants.

‘There’s always a resurrection’

In her harrowing journey to death’s door and back, Carmen Himenes was never alone

On a September day in 1995 Carmen Himenes lay in an isolation room in St. Francis Medical Center’s cancer ward.

At 45-years-old, Carmen, an associate superintendent at the Catholic School Department, was diagnosed with breast cancer. A frightening thing to discover. Worse, it was spreading. Seventeen of her lymph nodes were affected, a significant number.

Another step toward priesthood

Hawaii seminarian Nicholas Brown kneels to be instituted as a “reader,” one of the steps to priesthood, by Knoxville, Tenn., Bishop Richard Stika on March 20 at the Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corner, Wis. … Bishop Clarence Silva visited the two Hawaii seminarians at Sacred Hearts School of Theology, April 10, William “Pila” Tulua-Alvarez and Brown.

Editor’s Note: Both Brown and Tulua-Alvarez are now Diocese of Honolulu priests currently serving in the islands.
