Entrepreneur Sullivan’s generosity helped shape St. Francis Healthcare

Maurice J. Sullivan’s extraordinary generosity toward St. Francis Medical Center grew out of his loyalty and respect for two special women, according to a man who had worked closely with him over the past 25 years.

“Sully” Sullivan, the founder of the state’s largest grocery retail chain and one of the islands’ greatest entrepreneurs and philanthropists, died Feb. 28, 1998, at age 89.

Sullivan first became an associate with St. Francis Medical Center in the early 1970s when the hospital was badly in need of radiation therapy equipment, said Eugene Tiwanak, president of the St. Francis Healthcare Foundation.

Kupuna care

From cleaning to companionship, two Catholic volunteer programs tend to the needs of Oahu’s elderly

Kupuna Kokua targets elderly living in low-income units. These seniors often need help cleaning their homes in order to pass regular housing inspections by federal, state or private building owners. … Its volunteers come from St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church in Mililani and Our Lady of Sorrows in Wahiawa. …

Catholic Charities Hawaii also provides assistance for seniors. One of the organization’s service units offers friendly visits and transportation.
