Voices of Kalaupapa is the theme of webinar

02/01/2023 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Ka Ohana O Kalaupapa

Maui-based writer Valerie Monson, former executive director and coordinator of Ka Ohana O Kalaupapa, will be the first 2023 presenter of “Voices of the People,” a series of webinars hosted by the Damien and Marianne Catholic Conference. Her webinar, “You have to hear the voices to feel the people,” is Feb. 18, 10-11:30 a.m. Hawaii time.

Monson, a former reporter for the Maui News, has been chronicling the lives of Kalaupapa residents for decades. She was one of the original organizers of Ka Ohana of Kalaupapa, which for nearly 20 years has been dedicated to remembering each of the nearly 8,000 people who were taken from their families and forcibly isolated in Kalaupapa, Molokai.

The webinar is free. Preregister at www.dmcchawaii.org.
