Grassroots faith
Bishop DiLorenzo urges members of an interfaith group battling community inequity, to ‘Go for it!’
Most of the 8,000 faces that filled the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa on the morning of Oct. 25 were brown — those of first and second generation Filipinos, Samoans, Tongans and others who inhabit some of the less affluent areas of the Honolulu urban landscape.
They were brought together by their church leaders who listened to their stories of struggle and hardship and who have told them it is within their power to change their lives.
One of those church leaders was Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo. He was among the 20 or so pastors, priests, ministers and lay leaders at the Covenant Assembly Festival of FACE, or Faith in Action for Community Equity.
FACE is a social justice and community action organization composed of 10 Protestant congregations, six Catholic parishes, one Buddhist society and one community resident association. Together they represent 35,000 Oahu residents.

‘November’s Song’ brings to life Hawaii’s newest saint
Blessed Marianne Cope’s story contains a plotline apt for dramatic interpretation: She, a seasoned nun, successful hospital administrator, superior of her order, leaves the comforts of her motherhouse to travel thousands of miles to an isolated island kingdom to care for patients suffering from a deadly, disfiguring disease.
A group of local Catholics will soon be using the art of theatre to bring to life the emotions, events and faith that came with Blessed Marianne’s journey.
