Hawaii’s eight candidates for the permanent diaconate received from Bishop Larry Silva the ministry of acolyte, Sept. 11, at St. Stephen Diocesan Center Chapel with wives and families present.
The new acolytes are Michael M. Browning of St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church; David G. Bruce of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church; Jason F. Jacinto of St. Joseph Church, Makawao; John R. Metz of St. Joseph Church, Makawao; Marlowe G. Sabater of Resurrection of the Lord Church; Darryl S. Salvador of Resurrection of the Lord Church; John K. Thomas of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church; and Derek G.H. Wong of St. Jude Church.
The men form cohort 10, the tenth class to pursue the diaconate in the Diocese of Honolulu since 1978.
As acolytes, they have the duty of assisting clergy in liturgical celebrations, particularly the Mass. The Rite of Acolyte is the last major step before their ordination as deacons.
In February, the candidates received the title of lector, allowing them to read the Word of God, except for the Gospel, at liturgical assemblies.
