Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation (CCHDC) July 19 dedicated the second and final phase of its Kahului Lani senior affordable rental housing development in Kahului, Maui. The blessing, conducted by Bishop Larry Silva, was attended by Hawaii Gov. David Ige, Maui Mayor Michael Victorino, and Maui lawmakers.
Kahului Lani provides low-income seniors with an affordable permanent living option and complementary amenities. The project at 65 School Street has 165 rental units and a 7,500-square-foot multipurpose facility with social services provided by Catholic Charities Hawaii.
Kahului Lani is for seniors earning 60 percent or less of the Maui County median income.
“We want to thank everyone who was able to make this important project possible for our seniors,” said Catholic Charities CEO and president Robert Van Tassell. “Affordable housing has always been a top priority and it’s necessary to keep our kupuna safe and sheltered, particularly during this recent pandemic.”
Incorporated in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating as a subsidiary of Catholic Charities Hawaii, CCHDC owns, develops and manages real estate properties to provide affordable housing for the elderly, special needs individuals and other socially or economically disadvantaged persons and families.
“Catholic Charities Hawaii’s development arm provides our organization another way of helping those most in need,” said CCHDC president Michael Magaoay. “This senior housing complex is part of Catholic Charities’ long-term plan in developing more affordable rentals for our kupuna and families.”
The first phase of Kahului Lani, which broke ground in 2018, has 81 rental units and one resident manager’s unit. It opened to its first tenants in 2020. The second phase features 83 units and a two-story multi-purpose building with offices for Catholic Charities to provide case management services and programs for residents. Residents moved into their units in January.
CCHDC partnered with GSF LLC to develop Kahului Lani. Mitsunaga Construction Inc. was the general contractor. Financing for the project was provided by the State of Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation, Bank of Hawaii, First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaii Housing Finance LLC and CCHDC.
Maui County’s Department of Housing and Human Concerns was instrumental in fast-tracking the permitting process. Hale Mahaolu coordinated the tenant application process and is the property manager for the facility.
