New Papaikou church rises from the ashes

Alleluias were heard all over the Papaikou area on the Big Island, Sunday, April 7, when Immaculate Heart of Mary Church dedicated its long-awaited new church with the help of more than 700 friends and parish members.

The new building replaces the last church which was destroyed by fire in 1989.

Bishop Francis DiLorenzo, accompanied by retired Bishop Joseph Ferrario and a dozen priests, did the honors of blessing the church in traditional island style.

Bagels with their bishop

Bishop Larry Silva has had an especially busy few months. But he definitely hasn’t missed breakfast.

Through the “Bagels with the Bishop” events, the bishop met with more than 580 high school seniors in Hawaii’s seven Catholic high schools in February and March in informal breakfast meetings at which bagels and other food was served.

According to Tonya Stevenson, associate director of the Augustine Educational Foundation, which organized the program, the purpose of the events was to help the seniors maintain a link with their faith after graduation. … the event was only possible through a With Grateful Hearts grant.
