50 years ago — March 31, 1972

BAZAAR PRIZES—Miss Gloria Ancheta, St. Anthony Junior, poses with the 10-speed bike which will be given away at the St. Anthony Bazaar on Friday night, April 7. On Saturday night, the new 1972 Datsun will be awarded to the lucky ticket holder. Every dollar of scrip purchased from a St. Anthony student or at the bazaar makes the buyer eligible for the grand prizes.


25 years ago — April 4, 1997

Preaching Heaven to Halawa

On Easter Sunday morning, the inmates at Halawa Correctional Facility got a special treat. But it wasn’t a chocolate bunny or colored eggs or a basket of sweets. This gift came with a big smile, a hearty laugh, a Bible and a message of hope.

It was clear from the glowing faces of some 50 Catholic inmates – Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo’s Easter Mass in the prison chapel was better than anything the Easter Bunny could have pulled out of his basket.

The bishop celebrated Mass in a packed prison chapel, amid the noise of guards being buzzed in and out of secured doors.

Conversion story: No Doubts

Sepasi Maile sits in front of the Liliha Public Library and reflects on the journey he’s taken to becoming a Catholic. …

Maile, 27, is a catechumen from St. Augustine Church in Waikiki. He is one of 190 catechumens in the diocese who will be receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation during the Easter Vigil on April 7.

A product of Kalihi neighborhoods, but now a resident of Honolulu’s Salt Lake district, Maile comes to Catholicism from a Methodist background. His parents, who came from Tonga to Hawaii more than 30 years ago, have long been members of the First United Methodist Church in downtown Honolulu.
