They are:

  • Michael M. Browning, St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church, husband of Aggie Browning
  • David G. Bruce, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, husband of Hazel Bruce
  • Jason F. Jacinto, St. Joseph Church, Makawao, husband of Diane Jacinto
  • John Robert Metz, St. Joseph Church, Makawao, husband of Josephine Metz
  • Marlowe G. Sabater, Resurrection of the Lord Church, husband of Maria Sabater
  • Darryl S. Salvador, Resurrection of the Lord Church, husband of Diana Caro-Salvador
  • John K. Thomas, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, husband of Sandy Thomas
  • Derek G. H. Wong, St. Jude Church, husband of Lani Wong

The rite is a major step on the path to becoming a permanent deacon, allowing the candidates to read the Word of God, except for the Gospel, at liturgical assemblies. The next step will be the Rite of Acolyte.

This group of candidates is cohort 10, the tenth class to prepare for the diaconate for the Diocese of Honolulu. Bishop John J. Scanlan formed the first class in September 1978 and ordained the first eight permanent deacons in December 1981.
