Affordable air service has Kalaupapa beaming
New carrier ends the $500 round trip fares that had further isolated the remote community
For the first time in years, Kalaupapa residents say they feel free. A new air service offers regular flights to the isolated peninsula for a fraction of the cost of what employees, residents and visitors previously had to pay. Since Makani Kai Air Charters began service Dec. 10, residents are now “traveling in large numbers,” according to Department of Health Kalaupapa administrator Mark Miller.
“It has changed the character of the community knowing we can come and go,” he said.
The company’s cost for a round trip flight to topside Molokai or Honolulu runs about $150, compared to Pacific Wings’ $500 round trip fares — formerly the only flight option. Makani Kai also offers half price tickets — about $75 round trip — to registered Kalaupapa residents.
