Early learning success story

The numbers are in and the news is good. Hawaii Catholic pre-schools enjoyed a growth spurt last year with an enrollment increase of 14 percent.

Paralleling mainland trend, Hawaii Catholic pre-schools is the only segment of Catholic education that saw a significant increase over the past several years. By comparison, Catholic elementary and high school enrollment on average — some have done very well, others poorly — has been slowly sliding downward.

Waikiki parishioner leaves a quarter million to isle priests, religious

A quiet, unassuming parishioner of St. Augustine Church in Waikiki who died in 20210 has given hundreds of priests, brothers and sisters in Hawaii each a sizable monetary gift from his trust fund.

The late Hugh Brown, a native of New York who relocated to Hawaii in the 1970s, left more than a quarter of a million dollars which was distributed in December equally among 293 priest and religious who were serving in Hawaii at the time he died. Each received an individual check for $993.18.
