Special to the Herald
It was St. John Paul II who, in 1997, instituted a day of prayer for men and women in consecrated life, that is, those sisters, brothers and priests who belong to religious orders, institutes and congregations. This World Day for Consecrated Life is celebrated near the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord, Feb. 2, also known as Candlemas Day, the day when candles are blessed symbolizing Jesus Christ, the Light of the World.
On this day, all in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Christ to all God’s peoples.
The World Day for Consecrated Life will be celebrated by the universal church on Wednesday, Feb. 2, and in Hawaii parishes the weekend of Feb. 5-6.
We in our Diocese of Honolulu are deeply grateful to our men and women religious who responded to be disciples of Jesus Christ as consecrated men and women. May God continue to bless and reward them for sharing their God-given talents and their countless services here in the islands. May we remember to pray for them and to pray also for an increase of priestly and religious vocations.
Here is a list of the religious institutes in Hawaii. Some have many members, some are represented by only one person.
