Ewa parish soaked 3 times by rising waters

After being hit hard with floods three times in as many weeks, Immaculate Conception Church in Ewa is still cleaning out the mud and muck.

The first flood came on Nov. 5, Election Day. More than two feet of water collected in the parish hall, where Mass has been celebrated since termite damage shut down the church earlier this year. …

Community volunteer groups have already pitched in over the last few weeks. Associated Energy Services came out after the second flood Nov. 12 and tried to shore the area up with coral. Other groups, including many individual parishioners, sandbagged and swept mud.

According to parish secretary Essey Ho, the first flood came as a shock, the second was a little less awesome, but the third just finished the parish off.

U.S. Bishops approve U.S. feast day for Mother Marianne

Mother Marianne of Molokai will get her day on the U.S. liturgical calendar, but what that day will be has not yet been settled.

The U.S. bishops, gathered in Baltimore for their fall general assembly, voted on Nov. 15 to add an optional memorial for Blessed Marianne Cope in the proper saints calendar for the United States. … An optional memorial means a priest may celebrate the Mass prayers for that feast day if he chooses.

Blessed Marianne’s suggested date, Jan. 23, is already the optional memorial in the United States for St. Vincent the deacon and martyr. … Jan. 23 is Blessed Marianne’s birthday.

The date for a memorial is typically the day the person dies, which in Mother Marianne’s case was Aug. 9, 1918. However, that date is the feast of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), who died Aug. 9, 1942.
