Here are a few updates from the Catholic Committee on Scouting in Hawaii:

  • Father EJ Resinto, himself a Boy Scout Eagle award recipient, is the new chaplain for the Committee on Scouting. He is the pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Honolulu.
  • Sofia Garcia, a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Pearl City, American Heritage Girls troop, recently completed her Stars and Stripes project — AHG’s top scouting award — by creating a nearly hour-long video project highlighting Hawaii’s religious sisters. You can watch the well-produced video that includes an introduction from Bishop Silva at youtu.be/xtE_TjDHzmc.
  • St. John Vianney Troop 311 Boy Scout David King was working on earning a hiking merit badge recently when he and his mother, Christine, came across another hiking pair and their 100-pound pitbull, Smokey. The couple and dog had gotten lost on the Waimano Trail and wandered for hours. Smokey had injured his paws and was too heavy to carry. Twelve-year-old David used his scouting skills to build a makeshift stretcher with T-shirts and tree branches. David’s quick thinking helped them all get off the trail and his story made national news.
