THE MESSAGE IS CLEAR – The public is invited to the annual Damien Karnival to be held on the school grounds this weekend. Putting the finishing touches on the announcement are students Leonardo Tabin, Wayne Shishido and David Pena (left to right). For those attending, it will be a fun night and all will be helping a very worthy cause: Damien Memorial High School in Kalihi.

In a league of their own

Inter-school sports is alive and well among Catholic grade schools on Oahu

Volleyball fever may be high in Hawaii because of the awesome University of Hawaii Rainbows. But thanks to the Catholic Schools League, we can also cheer our grade school students as they serve, set, spike, save, scoop, and slam their way to success.

Begun in 1981, the volunteer-run league has provided youngsters with not just volleyball – happening right now – but two other sports seasons every year.

The league came into existence to replace the diocese’ Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) sports league, which folded its net 15 years ago.

Today, volleyball, along with basketball and track, give both boys and girls as young as 10 and 11 an opportunity to practice physical self-discipline and be a part of a team.

Blessings of the blankets

Father Gordian Carvalho, pastor of St. Pius X Church in Manoa and Sacred Heart Church in Punahou, blesses the handiwork of the 35 Hawaiian quilters of Na Lei Kapa Noeau O Tuwahine in the St. Pius X parish hall on Oct. 20. The needlecraft experts, ages 65 to 92, come together every Thursday morning at St. Pius X to work at the traditional Hawaiian craft. As a side project, the women created 77 blankets of all sizes and fabrics to donate to the parish’s outreach ministry, which will bring them to the children at the Next Step Shelter for the homeless in Kakaako.
