To be of service

One requirement of a Catholic high school education in Hawaii does not involve books or classes

Unlike most private and religious schools, nearly all of Hawaii’s Catholic high schools require volunteer service hours for graduation.

Each school has different requirements ranging from 25 to 120 hours. Some have the students find their own work outside of class time, others offer group volunteer work during school hours, and others require students to pick from a list of approved non-profit organizations at which to volunteer.

Hawaii’s international clergy

More and more of the Islands’ parish priests are coming here from other countries

Africa. Colombia. India. Indonesia. Micronesia. The Philippines.

An influx of priests arriving from international shores to the Diocese of Honolulu has, in a relatively short period of time, transformed the local Catholic clergy community into a virtual world map of cultures, languages and traditions. …

The 2011-2012 Directory of the Catholic Church in Hawaii lists about 40 foreign priests among the 108 clergy in local active ministry. That’s double what it was a decade ago, and more than five times what it was 20 years ago.

Eight new international priests made their way to the Islands in 2011 alone.
