The Hawaii Catholic Herald won seven Catholic Media Association awards this year for work done in 2020.
The newly renamed CMA (formerly the Catholic Press Association) held its second virtual Catholic Media Conference June 8-10. This year’s media awards were announced in a pre-recorded video shown during a Zoom awards ceremony on June 10.
Like last year, the CMA organized a three-day virtual conference with Zoom workshops, regional publication roundtables and keynote talks from Word on Fire’s Bishop Robert Barron, Cardinal Wilton Gregory of the Archdiocese of Washington, and a Vatican panel including Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
There were about 3,000 entries in the awards contest this year from across North America. Here’s what the Hawaii Catholic Herald, the Diocese of Honolulu’s biweekly newspaper, won:
Second place
- Best reporting on vocations to priesthood, religious life or diaconate: “The hermit of Haiku” by Anna Weaver. Judges’ comment, “The Hermit of Haiku is an outstanding article displaying how a vocation turns your life in many directions.”
