50 years ago —April 23, 1971

PROPOSED DAMIEN FIELD HOUSE – Summer 1972 is the preliminary target date for the completion of the Damien field house, pictured above. If revenue-raising measures are successful, construction could be started late this summer.

The projected cost of this undertaking is $366,000. …

When completed, the field house will be among the most modern in the state. …The basketball court will be made of TARTAN, a new and very durable material used for gymnasium floors. The court will conform to IHL standards. A folding vinyl wall will be installed to enable several activities to take place at the same time.


25 years ago — April 19, 1996

For the sake of the child

Catholic Charities open adoption process enriches the life of a childless couple.

Tom and Mary Seigurant are parishioners at St. John the Apostle and Evangelist Parish in Mililani. For years they tried to conceive a child of their own and were unsuccessful. They had thought about adoption but never seriously pursued it.

But one Sunday as Margaret and Tom stood at the back of church during Mass, Margaret picked up a brochure that said, “Is Adoption for You?” … One thing led to another and the Seguirants are now parents of a happy, intelligent, active 3-year-old.

The Seguirants have an “open” adoption with [birth mother] Carrie.

‘Surfer’ embraces family’s faith through tragedy

Hamilton worked closely with directors and cast to ensure the story was told correctly

Hawaii fans of surfing and cinema who appreciate stories of faith, resilience and renewal will find soul-swelling inspiration in movie theaters this Easter season.

“Soul Surfer,” a film based on the story of Kauai native Bethany Hamilton, opened nationwide on April 8. Chronicling Hamilton’s struggle and recovery after losing her left arm in a 2003 shark attack, “Soul Surfer” is the latest Hollywood endeavor to bring Christianity to mainstream media.
