Stephen Ministers

Trained to help you navigate life’s troubled waters

We all experience a period of difficulty or crisis. Having someone to help us through these hard times can ease our stress, loneliness or questioning. Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Pearl City has people trained to do just that – they are called Stephen Ministers.

Sixteen Pearl City parishioners were installed as Stephen Ministers at a commissioning Mass Feb. 25 by their pastor Father Michael J. Owens. …

The Stephen Ministry has been active at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church since 1988. After 50 hours of training, ministers commit themselves to two-years of giving one-to-one care to persons experiencing hospitalization, terminal illness, bereavement, old age, disabilities, job crisis, divorce, alcohol or chemical dependency, loneliness, depression, spiritual crisis and more.

Senior housing, the Franciscan way

“When they called us, I said, ‘Hurray!’”

Eulalia Chang sits at her dining table, recalling the excitement she felt when she and her husband Arthur learned they would be moving into Franciscan Vistas Ewa. …

The Changs are pioneer residents of St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii’s new 149-unit senior independent living community in Leeward Oahu. Franciscan Vistas Ewa opened its doors in late January to welcome 14 new tenants and more than 300 prospective visitors since.

A project conceived by the local Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities almost a decade ago, Franciscan Vistas Ewa strives to create a new model for senior housing, blending affordable amenities with the religious order’s 128-year-old island legacy of health ministry.
