Catholic Social Service Needs Support From All — Annual Appeal

MARRIAGE COUNSELING – (left) Married couples often have their own solutions to solve their marriage difficulties. However, just like some physical illnesses cannot be cured at home and a doctor must be sought, some marriage problems must also have professional help. This couple at the Catholic Social Service is seeking this competent service from a professionally trained family counselor.

And now graduation

The end of this month will quietly end an era in the history of our local church. On Feb. 29, Monsignor Daniel J. Dever will retire after being superintendent of Catholic schools for 42 years. …

The bishop appointed the 27-year-old Father Dever superintendent in 1954 at a time when the youthful diocese was growing in leaps and bounds along with post-war Hawaii.

In a career that spanned four decades and four bishops, Msgr. Dever has been a watchtower over a culturally, religiously and economically diverse school system that has seen boom and slump, excellence and struggle.

St. Patrick’s outreach program in Palolo closes after 30 years

After nearly 30 years of serving the homeless, elderly and financially strapped families in East Honolulu, the food pantry and outreach program run by St. Patrick Church in Kaimuki closed its doors on Jan. 14. Its director of 27 years, Pat Kaslausky, has retired.

[Pastor] Father Clarence Guerreiro said he also considered the condition of the outreach facility … Its run-down state has prompted the possibility of building a new facility based on the outreach goals to be determined by the parish.
