SEEING IS BELIEVING – (photo above)The Hawaii Catholic Herald sure gets around. Father Elmo L. Romagosa of New Orleans spotted this woman reading the Herald near the Eiffel Tower in Paris recently. He sent this photo to the Herald. At the moment the Catholic students of Hawaii are promoting the Herald among the island Catholics. The students prefer readers in the shadow of Diamond Head to readers in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. Support the students by renewing your subscription during February Press Month. The new superintendent

Among the apprehensions Joseph McHugh has in moving from landlocked Minnesota to his job as superintendent of the most isolated Catholic school system on the globe, is that he’d miss the day-to-day contact with the people he has been hired to serve.

McHugh begins as the new superintendent of Catholic schools in Hawaii and director of the diocesan Catholic School Department March 1. He succeeds Msgr. Daniel J. Dever, who is retiring after 42 years in the position. …

This is McHugh’s first administrative position on a diocesan level and he does not want it to separate him from the action.

Youth adds spark to March for Life

Honolulu celebrated a re-energized and more youthful March for Life this year Jan. 22 at the Hawaii state capitol rotunda.

A crowd of about 1,000 spread from Beretania Street fronting the capitol to the back of the building, concentrating mostly around a stage behind the statue of St. Damien to hear music and inspirational speeches.

A sizeable number of children, teens and young adults reflected this year’s theme, “Celebrating Life for Generations to Come.” …

With the event falling on a Saturday this year, organizers have the opportunity to offer a morning-full of children’s activities such as face-painting, games, storytelling and prizes.
