Church in Hawaii in Retrospect During 1970
There were not too many bright spots in the annuals of the Church in Hawaii during 1970. The indecision, the confusion, the restlessness of the Church in the World affected the Church in Hawaii.
The Church in Hawaii did receive much publicity in the early months of 1970 as it became the leading opponent of liberalized abortion. For Hawaii, this strong and out-spoken position was unique because the Church has always followed the role of quiet persuader and not the role of vocal advocate.

Bishop names new vicar general, vicar for clergy
Bishop Larry Silva on Jan. 1 named for himself two new right-hand men, Father Gary Secor as vicar general and Father Manuel Hewe as assistant vicar for clergy. Both positions overlap the terms of the priests they are replacing to assure smooth transitions.
Father Secor takes over for Father Marc Alexander, vicar general since 2006, who begins a six-month sabbatical on the mainland on Feb. 1. Both priests will share the position of vicar general through January.
Father Hew will assist Father Khanh Hoang, vicar of clergy since 2008. The two priests will run the clergy office together until June 30, after which Father Hewe will take over full time and Father Hoang will move to a mainland diocese for a year in the hope of alleviating an allergic condition.
