NEWS FROM PAGES PAST

50 years ago — Dec. 4, 1970

A CHAPTER FROM HAWAII’S CATHOLIC PAST — This church was dedicated in 1899. It was the third church to serve the faithful in this district. It stood until 1933 when a newer and more substantial church replaced this frame building. What is the name of this church, where was it located, who built it? Here is a hint: Father Ulrich added the porch to the church as seen in the above photo.

Answer: St. John the Baptist Church in Kalihi

Medical missionaries

Two Lanikai doctors say that, in bringing help to the world’s less fortunate, they gain much more

The Catholic Medical Mission Boards sent [Drs. Roger and Maria Brault] to Haiti, Colombia, Guatemala, Borneo and Calcutta. The experiences changed their perspectives about the issues of life, death, patience and poverty. …

It was while they were on a tour of duty in Haiti that the Braults encountered what they felt was a healthy perspective toward death. A 12- or 13-year-old boy was carried on a litter to their little clinic on a Haiti mountain. … The family didn’t try to escape the boy’s death. … The boy did not fear the death because there was no sense of hysteria surrounding it. …This was a message Maria and Roger wanted to bring home to Hawaii.

When the Braults returned … they worked for two years to found Hospice Hawaii, to spread the word that dying with dignity was a positive alternative to artificially sustain life in the face of a terminal illness.

Editor’s Note: Hospice Hawaii is now known as Navian Hawaii and recently honored Roger Brault as the 2020 Philanthropist of the Year. Maria Brault died in 1999.

Diocese adjusts status of Latin Mass community

Bishop Silva names a chaplain on Maui, a pastor on Oahu

The Latin Mass of 1962 is receiving increased recognition from the Diocese of Honolulu. Bishop Larry Silva has named a chaplain on Maui for a community of adherents to the “extraordinary form” of the Mass, commonly called the Tridentine Mass, and a pastor on Oahu. Both are first time positions. …

Father Nguyen said the Tridentine community has 75-100 members from all over Oahu.
