50 years ago — Nov. 13, 1970

MAUI EAGLES – Thomas Lee Dodd and Eric Adrian Kim have attained the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. Both are members of Troop 49, St. Anthony Church. Parents of Thomas are Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow P. Dodd. Mr. and Mrs. Bomani J. Kim are parents of Eric. Thomas, 16 years, is a member of the junior class at St. Anthony High School. He is a member of the Wailuku Union Church. He is an honor roll student interested in electronics, reading, baseball, track and swimming. He intends to continue his education in college after high school. Eric, 15 years, is a junior at St. Anthony High School and is also an honor roll students. Besides the Eagle Badge he also has the Parvuli Dei and Ad Altare Dei Awards, both Catholic Scout awards. Eric’s hobbies include participation in Pinewood Box Derby, rocket making and hunting. He plans to become an engineer.

Hospice west

St. Francis Healthcare Foundation launches $5 million fund drive for leeward Oahu facility for terminally ill patients

St. Francis Medical Center, the pioneer in the hospice movement for terminally ill patients in Hawaii, is planning its second hospice facility.

The proposed 18,000-square foot, bed hospice center will be built next year on the ground of the 23-acre St. Francis Medical Center-West campus.

Editor’s Note: St. Francis’ Ewa hospice center closed in 2014 and the hospital is now run by Queen’s Medical Center.

Hawaii clergy, others prepare for new, revised Mass prayers

With a year to go before the new translation of the Roma Missal goes into effect at the start of Advent 2011, the Diocese of Honolulu has begun preparing its clergy and other parish leaders for the historic liturgical changes.

The diocese welcomed the national workshop, “Welcoming the Roman Missal-Third Edition,” to the St. Stephen Diocesan Center, Oct. 26-27, to introduce Hawaii’s priests, deacons and lay liturgical ministers to the newly interpreted mass prayers. Clergy attendance was mandatory.
