The Diocese of Honolulu will join other dioceses across the country in the 2020 Diocesan Rosary Congress Oct. 3-9, to help the faithful fulfill the message of Fatima.
Full diocesan participation involves a minimum of 24 parishes and religious communities each taking six-hour slots between 6 p.m. Oct. 3 and 6 p.m. Oct. 9 to celebrate Mass, join in eucharistic adoration and recite the rosary every hour. Individuals generally commit to one hour shifts.
The congress is a lay initiative hosted by the diocesan Office of Worship with the blessing of Bishop Larry Silva. Participation of all parishes on all the islands is encouraged. Organizers ask that each parish or religious congregation designate someone to coordinate its participation.
Under normal circumstances, the congress consists of seven days and nights of Masses, eucharistic adoration, and an hourly rosary.
During the coronavirus pandemic, existing regulations regarding face masks, hand sanitizing and social distancing apply.
The rosary congress is offered in the spirit of reparation to restore the sanctity of life, to establish peace in our cities, nation and world, and to console the hearts of Jesus and Mary.
This year’s event provides the additional opportunity to pray for the end of the pandemic and the recovery of those affected.
The Office of Worship asks parishes to follow current safety protocols used for regular Masses and confessions. It also suggests that parishes create a registration system for participants to sign up for Mass, adoration and the rosary so that the maximum church capacity is not exceeded.
Volunteers should also be recruited to sanitize the church after each hourly shift, and to make sure participants are following safety procedures.
The Office of Worship also recommends parishes livestream the event.
Parish and religious congregation coordinators are asked to contact diocesan lead coordinator Cami Adams at camikjmj@gmail.com or 721-2307 by Friday, Sept. 25, to schedule desired days and hours to participate in the event.
