Announcements/Appointments
- Bishop Silva is happy to announce that Father Ornoldo Cherrez is incardinated as a priest of the Diocese of Honolulu, effective September 8, 2020, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Until now, Father Cherrez served a priest of the Apostolic Vicariate of Galápagos, Ecuador. He is currently the Chaplain of the Maui Hispanic Community and in residence at St. Theresa Church, Kihei. We congratulate and welcome him!
- Bishop Silva has appointed Deacon Gary and Valerie Streff as the Co-Directors of the Respect for Life Ministry in the Diocese of Honolulu, effective September 8, 2020. Deacon Gary Streff will also continue his diaconal ministry at St. Elizabeth Church, Aiea. They succeed Paulette Vernay, who retired in mid-July.
- Bishop Silva has appointed Vincent Guerreiro to the Diocesan Planning and Building Commission as the Leeward Oahu Vicariate representative, effective immediately through June 30, 2024
- Bishop Silva announces that Mr. George De Costa Jr., who previously served as a priest of the Diocese of Honolulu, ordained in 1964, was laicized by Pope Francis on July 29, 2020. The then-Father De Costa retired in 2002, but in 2009, when an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor was made against him, Bishop Silva permanently restricted him from all sacred ministry, a decision confirmed by the Holy See. Since then, several additional accusations have been made against Mr. De Costa. Being now laicized, he is no longer a member of the clergy and may not function as such anywhere in the world.
- We pray for all victims of sexual abuse by clergy, and we pray God’s healing for them and their loved ones.
