Catholic Charities flourished under Dinell’s directorship
Under the seven-year directorship of Tom Dinell, Catholic Charities tripled its budget, offering its often innovative services to the increasingly larger segments of Hawaii’s poor.

Big Island-west resurrects a treasured event
Five parishes honor 14 of their best in an evening of appreciation and song
Three years ago, Catholic Charities Hawaii stopped hosting its much-loved Island Treasures event. For 11 years, on an evening in May, hundreds of Catholics from across the state would fill the Sheraton Waikiki’s largest banquet hall for an elegant dinner and awards ceremony to honor each parish’s outstanding volunteer – the unsung hero, the invaluable servant.
On Aug. 27, on the Big Island, the west Hawaii vicariate resurrected the event with a new twist. They melded it to a “With Grateful Hearts” diocesan vocations concert. At the Kona Old Airport Pavilion, 14 “living Treasures” from five parishes were cheered by more than 500 of their closest friends, family and parishioners in a dinner program that featured the diocese’s traveling band of singing and dancing priests and sisters.
