Vicar general praises gifts and dedication of Hawaii’s Catholic school educators

The vicar general of the diocese praised the “giftedness” and the “dedication” of Hawaii’s Catholic School educators at the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit, which gathers Catholic school teachers, administrators and staff in prayer at the start of each new school year.

Taking the place of Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo, who was on the mainland, Marianist Father John Bolin presided and preached at the 9 a.m. Mass at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa where about 600 Catholic educators filled the pews.

Kalaupapa trail still closed, tour businesses on the brink

Access to Kalaupapa, the remote home of St. Damien, has always been difficult. Since April, however, it has been nearly impossible.

The settlement’s lifeline, the pali trail from topside Molokai to the peninsula 1,700 feet below, was closed after a landslide washed away one of the trail’s bridges. The closure has left some local businesses on the brink of survival, and many tourists and pilgrims without access to the famed peninsula. …

Access to Kalaupapa is now available only by plane.

Editor’s Note: After a trail repair following this 2010 landslide, the same portion of the bridge collapsed in a Dec. 2018 mudslide. It has been replaced again, but the peninsula is currently closed to all outside visitors.

PS: Hawaii Catholic Herald reader John Kong Kee called to say that in the last Heralding Back, the maiden name of the mother of Roland Tam Sing, the first local man to be ordained a Marianist, was misspelled. The correct spelling is Anita Ahloy. (It was misspelled in the original story 50 years ago.) John’s wife is Roland’s cousin.
