Obvious political bias
I rely on the Hawaii Catholic Herald to promote Catholic values, not show obvious political bias as in the July 24 article by Carolyn Woo. Her reference to “this administration” not making progress, and as she says, “in fact reversing gains which were lifelines to vulnerable communities” does not truly reflect the progress that the Trump administration has made. She may be unaware that black unemployment is at its lowest in 50 years, black colleges have received unprecedented support from the federal government, and prison reforms have begun to correct the injustices of the system. This has been accomplished during the past three years, while she cited that her worry “derives from the lack of meaningful progress over the past 50 years.”
President Trump has an abrasive personality, but his work for our country should not be defined by that. Much of what is reported in the media does not represent the whole of what he says. He has been outspoken in his opposition to abortion, unlike then-Senator Obama who said, “I am going to teach them (his two girls) first of all about value and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby!”
If, as she says, the dialogue today equates being poor with a lack of concern for life, it is because of a failure to understand the true roots of Planned Parenthood. President Trump should be lauded for his efforts to remove their federal funding.

Should be a wakeup call
The recent “race” assault by Democratic leader Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez directed toward our most beloved St. Damien, should be a wakeup call for all Catholics! To call a man who gave his life for the Hawaiian people afflicted with leprosy, knowing that he would not return to society, an example of “White Supremacist Culture” is a reflection of the dangerous and radical nature of this person’s ideology and those in Congress who support her. Using Father Damien’s “race” to incite hatred, is despicable. But, praise the Lord, good will come from this, because, “by their fruits you will know them.” (Matthew 7:16).
Arise, oh Catholics, and choose the side of Christ! We are in a spiritual battle and our Holy Mother Church is under attack by those who tell lies and distort the truth. Sin dulls the intellect. As Catholics we are called to pray for those who persecute us. Let us learn from the saints.
