Dominican Sister Malia Dominica Wong was interviewing a sister June 17 at the Sacred Hearts Sisters’ Malia o ka Malu convent in Kaimuki when she heard “angelic” singing coming from the chapel.
Checking out the source of the beautiful music she found a choir of familiar and unfamiliar faces. The familiar faces belonged to Hawaii’s Sacred Hearts sisters. The unfamiliar ones were members of the congregation’s leadership from India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Rome.
The latter had come to Hawaii for a meeting. In March! Prevented by coronavirus regulations from flying home they have been living with their Hawaii sisters for three months.
Benefiting from this quarantine was Sister Georgene Perry, seated right, whose celebration of her 70th anniversary of vows was the occasion for the choir practice. The foreign sisters hope to return home soon as rules are relaxed.
