50 years ago —June 19, 1970

FRIEND AND HUMAN BEING — Left, during a recent visit to Ala Wai School, Officer Ronald Souza, Patrol Division of the Honolulu Police Department, had lunch with the students and discussed with them the roles of the policeman and student within the community. Conscious of himself as a servant to the community, the police officer in Honolulu seeks to be a friend and human being rather than a mere enforcer of law.


25 years ago — June 30, 1995

Through Blessed Damien, pilgrims receive gifts of gratitude and hope

Draped in leis from Hawaii residents and surrounded by carnations and daisies sent by the Sacred Hearts Order, the black marble sarcophagus of Father Damien sits in the center of the dimly lit brick crypt in the basement of St. Joseph church in Leuven.

Three diocesan veterans retire

The diocese is losing an abundance of talent, knowledge and experience in the fields of liturgy, social ministry and education with the retirements at the end of June of three local church veterans.

Leaving diocesan service are Sacred Hearts Sister Helene Wood, director of the Office of Worship; Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet Roselani Enomoto, co-director of Parish Social Ministry and local director of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development; and Louise Wong, associate superintendent of Catholic Schools.
