Photo: An island Jesuit’s ohana

05/27/2020 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Hawaii-born and -raised Jesuit Father Shay Auerbach found an old family photo showing his island religious roots that he wanted to share with Hawaii Catholic Herald readers.

Here is how he identified the people in the picture using maiden names for all, from left:

  • Elizabeth Kahalelauhala Hew Siu (my great-grandmother);
  • Josephine Lee (my grandmother — possibly — my mom says it is her mother, her cousin says not. If my grandmother, the child would have been an aunt of mine who died in infancy);
  • Marian Lee (face partially covered, grandmother’s sister, possibly);
  • Anna Lee (grandmother’s sister);
  • little boy unknown;
  • Margaret Tang (grandmother’s cousin, sister to nuns);
  • Sacred Hearts Sister Elizabeth (grandmother’s cousin);
  • Marianne Pepe Hew Siu (my great grandmother’s sister, mother of the nuns);
  • Sacred Hearts Sister Mary Lucy (grandmother’s cousin), little boy unknown;
  • Catherine Tang (grandmother’s cousin, sister to nuns);
  • Julia Lee (grandmother’s sister, with her daughter [my aunt] Freida Gerlach);
  • Helen Lee (grandmother’s sister, probably).

Father Auerbach figures the photo to be “at least 90 years old … because my aunt Freida Gerlach is still alive and I think she is 93.” Father Auerbach is a pastor in Richmond, Virginia.
