Hawaii Catholic parochial schools will extend students’ time away from schools through Easter Monday.
“This is to inform you that our parochial schools will be postponing ‘in person’ classes through Friday, April 10, 2020,” Mike Rockers, the superintendent of Hawaii Catholic Schools said in an email to school administrators and pastors on the afternoon of March 19.
“For most of our schools, this means that distance learning will continue through that time. For some of our Early Learning Centers, who are unable to serve their constituents via distance learning, this means that there will be no school through April 10.”
Rockers said that this extension “will allow us all to stabilize our distance learning and focus on supporting our students and families the best we can.”
The Kuhio Day holiday on March 26 and the Good Friday and Easter Mondays holidays on April 10 and April 13 will remain days off if schools already planned them as such.
The extension of distance learning follows an earlier March 15 announcement that all 25 parochial schools and early learning centers in Hawaii along with the state’s three independent Catholic high schools should extend their spring breaks, or hold ones if not already planned, until March 27. Bishop Larry Silva approved the schedule change.
Maryknoll School, a K-12 school, is included among the parochial schools and will also go to distance learning through Easter Monday. Sacred Hearts Academy announced the same plans.
Saint Louis School said it would keep its campus closed through April 17 and use online learning instead.
Damien Memorial School plans to do distance learning March 30 to April 13, according to Pat Bigold, who handles PR for the school, although it has yet to be announced.
