50 years ago — March 6, 1970

CAMPING SITE – Camp Pecusa at Olowalu, Maui, will be the site for (Catholic Youth Organization) Excursion Campers from Oahu. The [tents] are set among trees near the beach and it is ideal for fun and recreation.


25 years ago — March 24, 1995

Raising the cross

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace gets its cross back. In one of the final touches in the re-roofing of the historic downtown Honolulu church, the original bronze cross and weathervane erected in 1866 was sandblasted and galvanized by SNM Welding Company to its original look. In the blazing mid-afternoon sun on March 15, construction workers loaded the several hundred-pound cross into a cart that mechanically carried it up to the cathedral rooftop. Once there, it was hauled up into the bell tower with ropes and muscle and finally replanted in its familiar position.

State board give go-ahead for Chaminade nursing program

With the approval on March 4 of the Hawaii State Board of Nursing, Hawaii’s Catholic university now officially has a nursing program.

This fall Chaminade University of Honolulu will launch The Sallie Y. Miyawaki School of Nursing, named for the late wife Dr. Edison Miyawaki who endowed $5 million to the nursing program last November. …

Chaminade expects to graduate its first class of 40 to 50 nurses in 2014. They will leave with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for their profession and will be prepared for the National Council Licensure Examination.
