Diocese to welcome this year’s catechumens at five Rites of Election

02/19/2020 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

2018 Rite of Election

The diocese has scheduled five Rites of Election, ceremonies in which Hawaii’s catechumens 7 years old and older preparing for baptism at Easter are welcomed and recognized by the bishop or bishop’s representative.

At the rites, the catechumens, also called the elect, make public their intention to receive at the Easter Vigil April 11 the three sacraments of initiation — baptism, confirmation and first Eucharist — by signing their names in their parish’s Book of the Elect. The book is then presented to the bishop or vicar forane.

Here is the schedule for the Rites of Election:

East Hawaii Vicariate: Saturday, Feb. 29, 5 p.m., St. Joseph Church, Hilo. Mass with vicar forane Father Paul Li.

West Hawaii Vicariate: Saturday, Feb. 29, 5 p.m., St. Michael the Archangel Church, Kailua-Kona. Mass with vicar forane Father Konelio Faletoi.

Kauai Vicariate: Sunday, March 1, 9:30 a.m., St. Catherine Church, Kapaa. Mass with vicar forane Father Anthony Rapozo.

Maui Vicariate: Sunday, March 1, 1 p.m., St. Theresa Church, Kihei. Celebration of the Liturgy of the Word with vicar forane Msgr. Terrence Watanabe.

Oahu Vicariates: Sunday, March 1, 1 p.m., Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Honolulu. Celebration of the Liturgy of the Word with Bishop Larry Silva.

The Rite of Election does not include those who will be received into “full communion” in the Catholic Church. Those are persons who are already baptized and are preparing to receive the one or two remaining sacraments of initiation. This is preferably done at a time other than the Easter Vigil.

The diocesan Office of Worship invites candidates for full communion to attend the Rite of Election “as part of the baptized assembly and to support those preparing for baptism.”

In preparation for the Rite of Election, the Office of Worship also encourages parishes to use the “Rite of Sending Catechumens for Election” on the Sunday before the Rite of Election.

Another pre-election rite, the anointing of the catechumens with the oil of catechumens, may be celebrated “whenever this seems beneficial or desirable,” the Office of Worship said.

2020 List of the Elect

Hawaii parishes have reported 189 catechumens who will sign the Book of the Elect next weekend and be baptized, confirmed and receive first holy Communion at the Easter Vigil April 11. Parishes not listed here either have no catechumens this year or did not report their names to the Office of Worship.
