50 years ago — Dec. 26, 1969

Peaceful invasion

[Pictured in the photos above] A group of some forty nuns from various convents on Oahu made a surprise visit to the residence of Bishop John J. Scanlan to sing Christmas carols on Monday evening. The invasion was a quiet event for teachers who spend much of their lives trying to be heard above the din of restless students in a classroom.

Bishop Scanlan, right, a most surprised individual, stood on the porch of his home to listen to the Christmas carols of the nuns, who took this step to express their “Merry Christmas” to the Bishop from all the religious working within the diocese of Honolulu.

25 years ago — Dec. 30, 1994

Damien’s beatification re-set for June 4

The place: Brussels, Belgium

Originally set for May 4, 1994, in Brussels, Father Damien De Veuster’s beatification was postponed three weeks before it was to take place because Pope John Paul II, who was to preside at the ceremony, broke his leg.

10 years ago — Dec. 25, 2009

A church renewed and rededicated

Bishop Larry Silva rededicated Honolulu’s Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa during a Dec. 10 evening Mass after extensive renovations changed the interior from a mauka-makai to a Ewa-Koko Head orientation.
