Resurrection of the Lord Church in Waipio, central Oahu, has formed a new monthly ministry for persons affected by mental illness.
Recognizing the unfortunate stigma so often connected to mental illness, HOPE for Mental Health Community provides an open and supportive environment for those with mental illness, their family members, friends and caregivers.
The group meets at 10 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month in the parish hall at 94-1260 Lumikula Street, Waipahu.
Studies show that the first place many people with mental illness go for help is their church, but many times churches lack awareness and sensitivity to the unique needs of those with mental illness and those who care for them. This new ministry seeks to remove the stigma which sometimes keeps people for seeking treatments that can improve their lives.
Father William Kunisch, pastor of Resurrection of the Lord, said, “Because the Lord is obviously sending these people to us, HOPE for Mental Health Community is an opportunity to witness to God’s mercy and compassion for those coping with mental illness. It’s about giving people hope.”
Each monthly gathering will include brunch, an educational component related to mental health featuring a guest speaker, fellowship and prayer. The next meeting is Saturday, Nov. 16, at 10 a.m. Those interested in attending, should RSVP with the parish office at 676-4700.
