25 years ago — Oct. 7, 1994

It’s official, he’s here to stay

Pope John Paul II named Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo as the fourth bishop of the Diocese of Honolulu. Bishop DiLorenzo has been apostolic administrator for the diocese for the past year.

The announcement was made in Washington on Oct. 4 by Archbishop Agostino Cacciavillan, the papal pro-nuncio to the United States.

A little overwhelming

Life has changed for the retired teacher whose cancer cure led to Father Damien’s canonization

In her 44 years as a teacher, Audrey Toguchi, now retired, doled out a lot of advice to her students. Since she was publicly identified in April 2008 as the woman whose cancer cure the Vatican declared as a second miracle needed to make Father Damien a saint, she finds herself in the role of advisor again.

This time she is counseling people who find her unlisted telephone number, who approach her in stores, who write her letters, or who contact her through others. …

“You have people who have problems and they just need to be reassured that God is there for them,” she said in a phone conversation Sept. 16.
