More than 400 applications were received in August for a new 81-unit Catholic Charities Hawaii affordable senior rental complex opening in February in Kahului, Maui.
The Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation (CCHDC), Catholic Charities Hawaii and Hale Mahaolu last month conducted a random lottery assignment for applications for Kahului Lani Phase I, a six-story housing complex for low-income seniors ages 55 and over. Applicants were to receive their status letter by the end of September.
Developed by CCHDC, the first phase of Kahului Lani consists of one-bedroom/one-bathroom units with amenities so residents can “age in place” and a manager’s unit. It is located across the street from Foodland at Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului.
Kahului Lani will help fill the critical need for affordable senior housing, “especially on Maui, where it is desperately needed,” said CCHDC president Rick Stack in a news release.
The future, second phase of Kahului Lani will also have a six-story building, this one with 83 units, and a two-story multi-purpose building, which will house offices for Catholic Charities case management services and programs for residents.
A subsidiary of Catholic Charities, CCHDC owns, develops and manages real estate properties that provide affordable housing for the elderly, special needs individuals and other socially or economically disadvantaged persons and families.
Hale Mahaolu is a private non-profit corporation that sponsors, develops, owns and manages 15 properties in Maui County that provide housing and supportive services for low to moderate income seniors and families. It is the project’s leasing agent.
