50 years ago — May 23, 1969

THE GRADUATES – The five graduating seniors of St. Stephen’s High School Seminary (left to right): John Alexander Rezentes, Terrence A.M. Watanabe, Alan Wing, Timothy P. Freitas, and Calvin Soares. Watanabe and Freitas are studying for the diocesan clergy of Honolulu and the other three are hopeful of entering the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and of Mary.

25 years ago — May 20, 1994

Bound for Belgium with leis and smiles

The final group, 60 in all, making a Father Damien pilgrimage to Belgium, crowded into terminal No. 7 at the Honolulu International Airport May 10.

The primary purpose of the trip, the beatification of Father Damien de Veuster, was no longer on the itinerary. The travelers, however, had remained undaunted even after Pope John Paul II, 73, slipped and broke his right thigh bone, postponing the event.

The religious studies major

“So what are you going to do with that?”

The religious studies majors at Chaminade University of Honolulu get asked that a lot. Their response: “Whatever we want.”

Today there are 20 religious studies majors ad minors and nine full and part-time department professors.
