G.I. Pen Pals

These students (pictured left) are among the leaders of Holy Cross first graders who write to G.I.s in Vietnam. They are (left to right) Cheryl Carveiro, Keven Dela Cruz, Cynthia Michael, Carolyn Carveiro, Lisa Huntsinger, and Richard Carveiro. The first grade class of Holy Cross School in Kalaheo, Kauai, was presented with a plaque from General [George H.] Young stationed in Viet Nam. How did this exciting event come to pass? All the girls and boys in the first grade had been writing little letters and drawing pictures to cheer up the soldiers in Viet Nam. One day a news reporter saw them and put the pictures on T.V. all over Viet Nam and two of the children, Carolyn Carveiro and Kevin Dela Cruz, had their pictures printed in the “Stars and Stripes,” a newspaper for servicemen. Because of the love and gratitude shown in the children’s letters, a plaque was presented by General Young to Sgt. Jackie W. Johnson of the 588th Maintenance Co. to deliver to the children on his special leave during December. The children were pleased and delighted to receive this beautiful plaque from General Young, which came as a total surprise.

The return to Kalawao

The bones of Father Damien will be carried back to the islands wrapped in the most solemn of Hawaiian tradition and encased in the best of Hawaiian artistry.

Four Hawaiian artisans have created kapa cloth and koa calabash gifts to honor and transport the relic of the Molokai missionary from Belgium to Hawaii after Damien’s May 15 beatification in Brussels.

During the beatification Mass, Pope John Paul II will present Hawaii with a portion of the remains of Damien which now rest in a tomb in Louvain, Belgium.
