Chaminade University of Honolulu honored three in its community with its annual Marianist Heritage Awards during Mass on Jan. 23. Classes were cancelled for 50 minutes that day during the time of the Mass so that people could attend.
Commended were Dominican Sister Malia Dominica Wong, who received the Chaminade Award; Riu Jiang Huang, who received the Marianist Award; and Savannah Delos Santos, who received the Founders’ Award.
Here is how the university described the winners:
Sister Malia Dominica Wong: “Sister Malia is tireless in her efforts to promote Chaminade University and the Marianist charism. In her words and actions she gives example to the values and goals of the university. In her teaching, her participation in the Center for Teaching and Learning, and her work within her department, she touches the lives of many people. Her heart and mind are set on making the world a more just and peaceful place.”
Riu Jiang Huang: “Huangy” has been the campus electrician for 20 years. No problem or situation ever seems to rattle him. No obstacle is ever too big. If he doesn’t have an immediate solution, it doesn’t take him too long to find an alternative. Whether you are the university president or a student in one of the residence halls, he greets you with a smile before he begins his work. He communicates the spirit of the faith, service and commitment to the Marianist charism in all that he does.”
Savannah Delos Santos: “Savannah exemplifies the Marianist spirit of faith, service, commitment to justice and community. Her participation in campus ministry activities, the Hogan program and Resident Hall Association are examples of how she uses her gifts and talents to make a difference at Chaminade. Her enthusiastic willingness to embrace every opportunity that is presented to her indicates both her faith and her response to God’s call.”
