Rites of Election 2019

[BISHOP OR HIS REPRESENTATIVE]

‘‘Do you wish to enter fully into the life of the Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist?’

[CATECHUMENS]

‘We do.’

[BISHOP OR HIS REPRESENTATIVE]

‘Then offer your names for enrollment.’

The passages above are from the dialogue that will take place at four Rites of Election across the diocese this weekend between Bishop Larry Silva, or his representative, and catechumens preparing to receive the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil, April 20.

This year will see 196 people welcomed into the Catholic Faith, according to the diocesan Office of Worship, about 10 fewer than the number baptized last year. The annual number of Hawaii catechumens has been around 200 for the past decade.

Printed on this page are the names of Hawaii’s 196 catechumens.

At the Rites of Election, the catechumens, also called the elect, made public their intention to receive the three sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. They do this vocally and by signing their names in their parish’s Book of the Elect which then is presented to the bishop or bishop’s representative.

Hawaii’s Rites of Election are scheduled as follows:

  • Big Island vicariates: Saturday, March 9, 5 p.m., St. Joseph Church, Hilo; Mass with Bishop Silva
  • Kauai vicariate: Sunday, March 10, 9:30 a.m., St. Catherine Church, Kapaa; Mass with vicar forane Father Anthony Rapozo
  • Oahu vicariates: Sunday, March 10, 1 p.m., the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Honolulu; celebration of the Liturgy of the Word with Bishop Silva
  • Maui vicariate: Sunday, March 10, 2 p.m., at St. Theresa Church, Kihei; celebration of the Liturgy of the Word with vicar forane Msgr. Terrence Watanabe

Easter is also the time for those already baptized who have not received one or both of the other sacraments of initiation, to do so and be received into “full communion” with the church, but preferably at a time other than the Easter Vigil.
