Training for their future
For years Catholic Social Services has been recognized by University of Hawaii’s School of Social Work and Queens Psychiatric Residents Training Program as an Agency with high professional standards. Professional people seeking further training are placed with the Agency and staff offers close supervision. Mr. Jay Nakasone, Miss Patricia Lanahan and Mr. Jimmie Paulino discuss relating theory to actual practice.

Governor declares ‘Year of Blessed Damien’
It’s official. Governor John Waihee has proclaimed 1994 as the “Year of Blessed Damien” in Hawaii.
“Father Damien gave his life caring for those individuals others chose to forget about,” the governor told the group of churchmen, nuns, Catholic school students, and government officials who crowded into his Capitol Center office for the Jan. 7 proclamation signing ceremony.
“His history is a very moving one,” Waihee said. “He represents the aspirations of Hawaii and I am excited he is finally getting recognized for his contributions.”

‘We do not run aimlessly!’
Father Peter Dumag completes Honolulu Marathon on prayers for vocations
When Father Peter Dumag ran the Honolulu Marathon on Dec. 14, the newcomer to the race had to deal with rain and a swollen knee. But the vocations director for the Diocese of Honolulu says he was able to finish the 26.2 mile course because he had an aim in mind.
“I was praying silently while running for the perseverance of our seminarians and for the increase of vocations.”
