Highlights of 1968 in Life of the Church in Hawaii

New churches were a part of the Hawaii Catholic Herald’s year in review section. In 1968, the bishop blessed the new St. Stephen Church on the Pali Highway, St. Anthony Church in Kailua and St. Anthony Church in Kalihi. Sts. Peter and Paul Parish on Kaheka Street and St. Elizabeth Parish in Aiea broke ground for new churches. Former mission church Our Lady of Mount Carmel became a parish.

25 years ago — Dec. 17, 1993

Daniel and other mighty action figures

In a world where getting children to learn to read the Bible can be as easy as forcing them to eat broccoli, the Daughters of St. Paul at their Bishop St. book and media center have managed to capture youthful religious interest with products full of light, sound and action.

“This season, the hot gift items for children are the Bible Nintendo Games, religious dolls such as Precious Moments, the Mary doll and Faith, Hope and Love dolls,” said Sister Deborah… .

The Bible-based video games are made by a company called Wisdom Tree for use in Nintendo Entertainment Systems and Game boys. …

Besides Bible Adventures, St. Paul’s bookstore also carries other video games from the series such as Bible Buffet, Joshua, and Journey to the Promised Land (Exodus).

A pilgrimage wonderful and inspiring

The 10 members of Hawaii’s Japan beatification pilgrimage group returned home on the morning of Thanksgiving Day, tired after a hard 10-day schedule, but with hearts and minds uplifted at having seen and experienced so many wonderful and inspiring moments of Catholic life in Japan.

The highlight was the Nov. 24 ceremony itself in which 188 Japanese martyrs were beatified. The crowning event of the pilgrimage tour to Nagasaki, it fell on a national holiday in Japan, Labor Thanksgiving Day.
