Bishop to observe Filipino tradition of pre-Christmas dawn and evening Masses

12/12/2018 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Bishop Larry Silva will again this year observe the Filipino tradition of celebrating a novena of Masses on the nine days before Christmas. The bishop will preside at four early morning Misa de Gallo liturgies and six evening Simbang Gabi Masses, from Dec. 15 to Dec. 24 at 10 parishes on Oahu and the Big Island.

He will celebrate two Masses, morning and evening, on Dec. 23.

The Misa de Gallo, or Mass of the rooster, is customarily celebrated before dawn. It is also called the Misa de Aguinaldo, or “gift” Mass. The Simbang Gabi, “night Mass,” is celebrated in the evening.

Traditional Filipino treats are served after each Mass.

Here is the bishop’s Simbang Gabi schedule.

  • Dec. 15, 5-6 p.m., Sacred Heart, Waianae
  • Dec. 19, 6-7 p.m., Our Lady of Lourdes, Honokaa
  • Dec. 20, 6-7 p.m., St. Michael, Kailua-Kona
  • Dec. 21, 7-8 p.m., St. Joseph, Hilo
  • Dec. 22, 5-7 p.m., Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Ewa Beach
  • Dec. 23, 7-9 p.m., St. Roch, Kahuku

Here is his Misa de Gallo schedule.

  • Dec. 17, 5-7 a.m., Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Honolulu
  • Dec. 18, 5-7 a.m., Our Lady of Sorrows, Wahiawa
  • Dec. 23, 4:30-6:30 a.m., St. Joseph, Waipahu
  • Dec. 24, 5-7 a.m., St. John Apostle and Evangelist, Mililani
