Photo: Advocate for a potential saint

09/19/2018 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Archbishop emeritus of Ernesto A. Salgado of Nueva Segovia, Philippines, preaches at a Mass in the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu Sept. 8. He was there to promote the sainthood cause for Bishop Alfredo F. Verzosa, the first Catholic bishop from the country’s northern Ilocos region where many of Hawaii’s Philippine immigrants have roots. The archbishop initiated the cause for beatification and sainthood for Bishop Verzosa in 2013, an effort that was approved by the Vatican. Archbishop Salgado said Bishop Verzosa “deserves to be canonized because of the virtues he practiced during his lifetime, especially patience in the midst of suffering.”
